GREAT FILMS IN THE COURTYARD OF KYTHERA LIBRARY
In collaboration with the Kythera Cultural Association and the Film Club, the Municipal Library announces a summer season of film showings in the library courtyard. Beginning on Thursday June 11th, every second and fourth Thursday of the next three months will be devoted to the free showing of a classic film; we will be alternating foreign films (subtitled in Greek) and Greek films (subtitled in English), the latter with a view to offering a least a brief glimpse of the riches of quality Greek cinema to Kythera’s foreign residents and visitors.
The June program leads off with the Taviani Brothers’ masterpiece Kaos on the 11th, followed on the 25th by Pandelis Voulgaris’ Little England (“Mikra Anglia”), a beautifully filmed record of the island of Andros from the 1920s to the 1950s, recounted through the lives of two sisters and their ambitious mother.
On July 8th we will be showing Blow Up, Michelangelo Antonioni’s quintessential account of sixties, and on July 23rd The Reconstruction (“Anaparastasi”), Theodore Angelopoulos’ first feature film, the sober, gripping account of a murder investigation in a remote Greek village which some critics still regard as his masterpiece.
All showings are free, and begin at 9.00 pm in the courtyard of the Kythera Municipal Library in Kontolianika (100 metres off the main road between Karvounades and Tsigalaria, signposted “Agios Elias”).
